Connor has always been our picky eater. He eats pretty much the same thing for breakfast and lunch everyday, but dinner is another story. He is so picky that he would rather go without dinner than try something new or eat something he thinks he doesn't like. He usually only eats dinner about 2 out of the 7 days in a week! We have tried several different approaches, but Connor is VERY stubborn, so most things (threats, bribes, etc,) just don't work for him. Recently, through a friend of a friend, I came across an idea that I thought might work for him--it was worth a try! We made a "Very Healthy Dinner Caterpillar" and hung it up on the fridge. Each member of our family could add circles to the caterpillar if he/she met one or more of the following qualifications:
1. You try something new.
2. You eat something you don't really like.
3. Connor tries/eats his dinner.
When we used up all the circles for our caterpillar, we would be able to do something fun as a family. At first, Connor was pretty skeptical of the whole idea and the first few weeks were a little rough for him because we also changed how dinner was "presented" to him. Before, we would let him choose what he wanted to have (if anything) on his plate, but now we put a little of everything--he still gets to choose whether or not to eat it. He really disliked having things on his plate that he didn't want to eat, but we stuck to it, and I feel like it is starting to pay off. In the last 2 weeks he has tried fish sticks, mashed potatoes, rice, and spaghetti--all things he has NEVER tried before!!! We finally used all the circles for our caterpillar, so now we will be going bowling (Connor's choice because he had the most circles) as our reward. We started a new "Very Healthy Dinner Caterpillar" last night. I don't know if it will keep working, but for now we are extremely proud of Connor for trying so many new things this month!
