A couple of weeks ago, Connor came down the stairs just before bedtime and announced that he wanted to build a fort in the backyard. We said OK even though we weren't really sure where this idea had come from or how he would do it. Well, Jason sent out an e-mail to some of his colleagues at UNCSA thinking that there might be some sets or building materials left over from one of the shows at the school that Connor could use.
A couple of days later, someone contacted Jason about a "pile" of wood that he could have because they needed to get rid of it. It was left over from a film and they were losing their storage space the next day so they had to get rid of it. They were happy to donate to Connor's fort and they even offered to deliver it to our house and provided a big tarp to keep it safe from the rain. It was A LOT of wood--more than enough to build a fort.
After thinking it over for a few days, the kids decided to use our existing play set as the base for the fort because it was falling apart anyway and we had already talked about getting rid of it. Jason helped them come up with a plan and then he put them to work with a hammer and nails. They each took turns with the hammer and carefully constructed the first wall of the fort. Then they did the same thing for the other side.
Eventually, they had to have some help from Jason and a real saw. So we borrowed a saw to cut the wood to fit the other two walls of the playset turned fort.
They are very proud of their work. They're still thinking of a name for it and they have plans for a few more things, like a flag on top and a message box.
Pretty awesome.
